Tesla’s Greatest Inventions

Patents, machines and experiments — what each one was, and what it actually changed.

Alternating current and the induction motor

The polyphase system patented in 1887–88 — generator, transformer arrangement and brushless induction motor as one design — is the direct ancestor of essentially every power grid and industrial motor in service today.

The Tesla coil

A resonant air-core transformer, patented in 1891, that converts modest input voltage into very high voltage at high frequency. Its resonant-circuit principle runs through early radio, ignition systems and modern high-voltage test equipment.

Remote control, turbines and radio work

The radio-controlled boat of 1898 was the first public demonstration of a vehicle steered by wireless signal. The bladeless turbine of 1913 drove smooth discs by viscosity. His tuned-circuit work is a genuine and essential contribution to radio, though he did not build a communication system.
